Polymer layer removal using laser technology
Plain bearings have a wide range of applications in the engineering industry, but their refurbishment brings certain pitfalls. Removing the polymer layer can be done mechanically, but there is a risk of damaging the metal surface. Another option is to evaporate the polymer layer, but this requires high temperatures (above 450°C), especially for polyamide. This method can be problematic, especially for aluminium alloys, as it can cause dilatation of the material and also requires the removal of any fasteners and seals. All this causes considerable time and energy requirements.
Laser removal of the polymer layer is a very efficient alternative. The pulsing laser beam penetrates the polymer layer and disrupts the bond between the polymers and the metal. The polymer can then be easily removed. The entire process takes only a few minutes and does not risk damaging the part or contaminating the surrounding area.
The laser method offers several advantages. It is fast, safe and gentle on the part itself. This means that there is no need for complicated disassembly or to worry about deformation of the material caused by high temperatures. Laser removal of the polymer layer is therefore an efficient and reliable way to refurbish plain bearings without unnecessary complication and time loss.
